Meet the FPI Staff

Happy New Year! We have a lot to be excited about here at FPI. The new decade kicks off with FPI adding a new face, so we thought it would be the perfect opportunity for you to get to know more about our team as we begin another year together.

I’ll start with a little about myself. I’m Natha Dempsey, and have been president of FPI since November 1, 2019. I’ve only been in this seat for a few months, but am already very busy promoting FPI and foodservice packaging to many folks.  I did have a running start.  Prior to November 1, I had served as FPI’s vice president since joining the association in December of 2010. During the last decade, I led the industry’s efforts to expand recycling and composting of foodservice packaging and also worked in the areas of communications, technical and research. Being the figurehead of FPI, I’m only building on to my solid foundation.  This year, I look forward to engaging our members and other stakeholders on critical issues for our industry. When I do step away from work, my husband and I enjoy traveling and our dogs, Tiny and A.J.

Next up is Jennifer Goldman. Jennifer has been with FPI since early January 2011, a mere 2 weeks after I started.  Fun fact: Jennifer and I knew each other before we came to FPI.  We worked together for several years at SPI, now known as the Plastics Industry Association. Jennifer is our director of meetings and operations and a Certified Meeting Professional with over 20 years of experience. At FPI, Jennifer is responsible for organizing our fall and spring conferences (be sure to give her a big thank you when you see her at the spring conference in Naples!); handling all of FPI’s social media; maintaining communications schedules; spearheading FPI’s website; and administrative details without which FPI would not run – like managing FPI’s dues!  When she’s not at the office, Jennifer enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband, Chris, and her godson, Andrew.

Jennifer and I hold down the fort at FPI’s headquarters in Falls Church, Virginia.

Brian Sernulka, our director of government relations, is based in Atlanta.  He joined FPI in October of 2018. Over his career, Brian has held various positions in government and public affairs.  This has worked out well for us at FPI, because Brian works on all government relations for us at the federal, state, provincial and local levels. Brian studied abroad at the University of Havana while attending Georgia State University and earned a certificate in Colonial Spanish History.

Lastly, let me welcome Ashley Elzinga to the FPI staff. She joins us as our new director of sustainability and outreach. Ashley, who lives in Michigan, has been working in the sustainability and environmental field since graduating from Grand Valley State University with a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management and a minor in Environmental Studies.  Now that Ashley is on board here at FPI, her work will primarily focus around communications, outreach and FPI’s recovery efforts. When they are not going on adventures with their corgi, Dutch, Ashley and her husband enjoy working toward their goal to visit all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums — 10 down, 20 still to go.

So, now that you have a little more information about our staff, feel free to reach out!  We love answering questions and certainly talking about foodservice packaging.  If you have any questions for us, please feel free to email us at Or, you can even call us at 703-592-9889. We look forward to making great strides for the foodservice packaging industry in 2020.
